Pressure Decay Testing To Confirm The Leak

Before anyone opens a foundation, it is worth proving there is a leak and knowing which line it is on. We isolate the hot and cold sides separately, put them under pressure and watch the gauge โ€” a line that holds is not the problem, and a line that drops is.

Service to fix my garbage disposal was impeccable. Dennis's demeanor was extremely professional and pleasant. He arrived within half an hour of the 4 hour window, took care of business in under 10 min, and left the area cleaner than when he arrived. Thank you!

What A Pressure Test Proves

We close the system off from the meter, bring it up to a known pressure and watch the gauge over a set period. Water is effectively incompressible, so a sealed line that is intact holds its reading almost indefinitely. A reading that decays means water is going somewhere it should not. It is the closest thing to a yes-or-no answer in this trade, and it is cheap to run.

2

Isolating Hot From Cold

Testing the whole system at once tells you there is a leak but not where to start looking. Isolating the hot and cold sides and testing them separately halves the search immediately, and it frequently settles the question on its own โ€” a hot side that decays while the cold side holds steady points straight at the recirculating loop under the slab, which is where most of the failures we see across Southern California actually are.

3

When The Test Comes Back Clean

Sometimes both sides hold. That is a genuinely useful result: it means the water loss is not a pressurised supply leak, and the money would be wasted opening the slab. At that point we are looking at a drain or sewer line, an irrigation leak outside, a running toilet or a meter fault โ€” and we will tell you that rather than keep testing a system that has already passed.

4

Where It Fits In The Sequence

Pressure testing is the confirmation step, not the locator โ€” it proves a leak exists and narrows it to a side, then acoustic and thermal work find the point. Running it first stops us from chasing a thermal artefact across a floor, and running it last verifies the repair actually held before the concrete goes back down.

Detection is $150โ€“$400, quoted before we start, and the repair is a separate quote given after the diagnosis. Tell us what you are seeing.
