How Acoustic Detection Works
A pressurised pipe that has failed pushes water out through the break, and that escape makes a continuous high-frequency hiss. It is far too quiet to hear standing in the room. Ground microphones placed on the floor pick it up and amplify it digitally, and because the sound is loudest directly above the failure, moving the sensor across the slab in a grid narrows the location down to a small area โ usually within a foot or so.
